Camping Akademie e.V.
Since 2008, Camping Akademie e.V. by the two Berlin based artists Christine Falk (painting) and Alfred Banze (media art) makes participatory art projects. Without a fixed location, they develop thematic exhibitions, symposia, workshops, talks and performances with and for participating artists in Berlin and worldwide, often in emerging and developing countries. Since 2004 they make art projects in Thailand.
"Social Plastic" is a Community Art Project by Camping Akademie e.V., Germany in cooperation with Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts & Culture, Thailand and Jatiwangi Art Factory, Indonesia.
Theme: plastic waste / environmental protection. How can local communities deal with their own waste? The project takes place in the small town of Nongpho near Ratchaburi. Residents, local cultural and environmental activists, monks, schools and businesses will be involved in the project. It includes talks, lectures, performances, do-it-yourself workshops and a website: www.social-plastic.net. "Social Plastic" raises the question of a relationship of dealing with plastic waste with social and cultural structures: how can we develop a new awareness in dealing with our waste? The project asks for meaningful avoidance and utilization strategies. Are there any traditional packaging materials that can be used? Can the manufacturers be obliged to act? What ideas evolve, are there feasible realistic solutions?
For one week, the plastic garbage from Nongpho will be collected and piled up into a huge "stupa." Then the garbage has to be eliminated. But how, by burning, burying, will it succeed? The German Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics in Stuttgart has developed a cost-effective multi-chamber oven for burning household waste, specifically designed for the use in developing and emerging countries. A prototype of this oven will be brought to Nongpho for testing and reconstruction, so that families can burn their own garbage. In the spirit of Joseph Beuys concept of "social plastic" the project "Social Plastic" is an experiment on collective art production and subcultural / social processes.
